Deck Aptitude Test is a training app, not an examination and not a qualification. These terms set out what you can expect from it, and what it expects from you.
By downloading, installing or using Deck Aptitude Test (“the App”), you agree to these Terms of Use. If you do not agree, please do not use the App. If you are using it on behalf of someone else, a student or a class for example, you confirm you have the authority to accept these terms for them.
These terms sit alongside the Privacy Policy and Apple’s own Licensed Application End User Licence Agreement, which applies to every app distributed through the App Store.
Deck Aptitude Test is a maritime aptitude trainer. It offers 35 training modules across six categories: Watchkeeping, Navigation, Rules & Signals, Engine Room, Comms & Codes and Exam Core. Modules cover formats used in maritime selection and sponsorship testing, from navigation lights, buoyage, sound signals and signal flags to radar plotting, mental arithmetic, verbal reasoning and spatial tests.
Questions are generated by rule engines rather than drawn from a fixed bank, sessions are scored, and difficulty is organised into levels that tighten as you advance. The App can tailor its module hub to a chosen career track: Deck Cadet / OOW, Marine Engineer / ETO, or VTS Operator / Pilot. Answers come with explanations, and several modules include unscored Learn modes.
Deck Aptitude Test is a training and practice tool only. It is:
Scores, percentages, levels and mastery ratings shown in the App are indicative game feedback, produced by comparing your answers to the values our generators authored. They are not measurements with professional standing. Question formats are our own interpretations of publicly known test styles; real exams differ in content, scoring and conditions.
The App’s content, including its renderings of navigation lights, day shapes, buoyage, sound signals, signal flags and collision-avoidance scenarios, is simplified training material. It must never be used for real-world navigation, watchkeeping or collision-avoidance decisions. At sea, rely on the official publications, your equipment, your training and your judgement. Nothing in the App is nautical advice.
Several modules play audio and some are designed for headphones, including spoken figures, radio-style traffic and synthesised whistle signals. Protect your hearing. Set the volume so audio is comfortable, and never raise it to make a difficult item easier to hear. Take regular breaks. On iOS you can cap output in Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Headphone Safety, and we recommend leaving that enabled. You are responsible for the volume at which you choose to listen.
You may use the App if you are able to form a binding contract where you live, or if you have the consent of a parent or guardian.
The App has no accounts and no sign-in of any kind. Your progress is stored on your device, which means it is yours alone, and also that deleting the App deletes it. Keep an iPhone backup if that matters to you. The App does send anonymous usage statistics; see the Privacy Policy.
Lower levels of each module include a number of free plays; higher levels require Deck Pro. Free plays, levels, scores and mastery records are game mechanics, not property. They:
Spending a free play, or losing progress because you changed or reset your device, does not entitle you to a refund or to compensation. Because progress is stored only on your device, we cannot recover it for you. We may change how many free plays each level includes and which content is free.
Deck Pro unlocks unlimited training across all levels of all modules. It is offered as an auto-renewing weekly subscription and as a one-time lifetime purchase. The price for your region is set through the App Store and is always shown in the App, in your own currency, before you confirm.
The App and everything in it, including the software, the interface design, the Deck Aptitude Test name and logo, the module structure, the question generators, the written copy and the artwork, belongs to us or to our licensors and is protected by copyright and other intellectual property law. References to publicly known conventions such as the COLREGs, IALA buoyage or the International Code of Signals describe subject matter; our renderings and teaching material are our own.
You are granted a personal, revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the App on devices you own or control, for your own training. You may not:
Your own progress data is yours. Feedback and suggestions you send us may be used without obligation or compensation, and we appreciate them.
You agree not to:
We may suspend or terminate access if you do any of these.
The App relies on services operated by others: Apple for distribution, payments and subscriptions, Google (Firebase Analytics and Cloud Firestore) for anonymous usage statistics and feedback, and RevenueCat for purchase validation. None of them receives anything that identifies you; what each one handles is set out in our Privacy Policy, and their own terms govern their side of it. We are not responsible for outages, changes or failures in those services, though we will do what we reasonably can to work around them.
We aim to keep Deck Aptitude Test available and working, but we do not promise uninterrupted service. We may add, change or remove modules, levels, question types or features; we may require you to update to a supported version; and we may discontinue support for older operating systems. We may stop offering the App altogether, in which case we will give reasonable notice and stop charging subscriptions.
The App is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. To the fullest extent permitted by law:
Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or under mandatory consumer protection law where you live. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected.
You can stop using the App at any time by deleting it. We may suspend or terminate your access if you materially breach these terms, and Apple may do so under its own agreement with you. On termination, your licence ends; sections that by their nature should survive, including intellectual property, limitation of liability and governing law, survive.
We may update these terms as the App evolves. The date at the top always reflects the current version. If a change is material, we will tell you inside the App or on this site before it takes effect. Continuing to use the App after a change means you accept the updated terms.
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Turkey, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Disputes are subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Istanbul, Turkey. If you are a consumer, this does not deprive you of protections or forums granted by the mandatory law of the place where you live.
